Overview

This part begins to identify teaching moves that can help students understand and use representations shared by a classmate. By supporting students’ use and recording of representations during whole-class discussions, teachers can:

Elicit student thinking
Scaffold students’ learning of a key mathematical practice
Model interest in the thinking of others
Help students make sense of each other’s ideas and the relationship of those ideas to the mathematics of the lesson
