Fractions - Session 2: Understanding and using representations of fractions

Part 3: Analyzing representations of ¾

video of math teacher

Overview

Flexibility with multiple representations is important in teaching. Different representations make different aspects of the mathematics visible. In addition, different students may use and understand different representations. Teachers therefore need skill in analyzing representations and explaining how a particular representation does or does not represent the intended mathematical ideas.

This part introduces an activity that involves analyzing and explaining possible representations for ¾. This activity will be used and built upon in other parts of this session and in Session 3.
