Fractions - Session 2: Understanding and using representations of fractions

Part 6: Types of connections with representations

Overview

Using representations in teaching involves making different types of connections. Having a typology of connections can serve as a tool for learning about, supporting, and extending student understanding about when and where mathematical representations are used in instruction.

This part introduces some of the types of connections that can be made:

  • Between student thinking and a representation
  • Within representations of the same type
  • Across representations of different types
  • Between a representation and the problem statement
