Fractions - Session 8: Supporting students' narrations; and using a 'public-recording-space checklist'

Part 4: Analyzing students’ methods for comparing fractions

Overview

Records of student solutions to mathematics tasks provide a vehicle for exploring student thinking. Teachers can use their analysis to deepen their understanding of mathematics and to inform and improve their lesson planning and instruction.

This part uses images of recordings in public space to analyze student solution methods for a fraction-comparison task.

Key Points

Some questions to consider when analyzing records of student work:

  • What are the mathematical requirements of using the strategy?
  • What questions might you ask students about the representation? For what purposes (e.g., to raise a mathematical point, to clarify, or elicit thinking, etc.)?
