Reasoning-and-explanation - Session 5: Producing “good” mathematical explanations

Part 6: Wrap up

Session Summary

This session focused on working on a mathematics problem that encouraged making and explaining conjectures through justification. This was followed by considering the features of “good” mathematical explanations and ways for teachers to make mathematical practices explicit to students. The session closed with an opportunity to discuss problems from curriculum materials that were identified as having the potential to support mathematical reasoning.

Session 6 will focus on appraising a student’s explanation using the features of a good explanation and also include an opportunity to engage in video workshop.
