Overview

Session 7 focused on how teachers can capitalize on the explanations that students share and included a third video workshop experience.

Session 8 extends work in the module on making and justifying conjectures by considering this type of reasoning within a different mathematics strand. Geometry will provide a next context for appraising students’ mathematical explanations and identifying teaching moves in response to students’ explanations. The session focuses on:

  • Making and justifying conjectures in geometry using different approaches and considering features of “good” explanations in the context of a different mathematics topic
  • Analyzing students’ explanations and using what is learned to design teaching moves and consider how to make mathematical practices explicit to the class
