CULINARY KIDS: COOKING ADVENTURE
\n<\/span><\/strong>This week in Culinary Kids, we started our cooking journey learning a handful of finger food recipes in the theme: Finger Foods and Superbowl Snacks! \n<\/span>In our class we explored all aspects of slime. We learned about slime in nature and how important it was to animals and plants and to humans. We had stories about slime and designed slime types and slime art. All in all we had hands-on fun. \n<\/span><\/span>This week, Hawai\u02bbi Nature Explorers kicked off an exciting summer of discovery! Students learned what makes an insect an insect, explored insect life cycles, and discussed the important roles bugs play in our ecosystems. We practiced kilo (careful observation), learned about native, endemic, and invasive species, and put our scientific skills to work during a campus bug safari. To wrap up the week, students visited the UH Bug Museum and Japanese Garden, where they observed a variety of insects and explored the connections between nature and culture in Hawai\u02bbi.<\/p>\n![\"\"](\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/crdg.hawaii.edu\/summerprograms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/SP-2024_0035_HNS-Observers.png?resize=63%2C69&ssl=1\")

\n<\/span>This week, we have been learning all about Insects. Students have been learning about the different types of insects, went on an observational scavenger hunt, and made a fun butterfly lifecycle craft using pasta. \n<\/span>The Hawai\u02bbi Nature Study Researchers began their exciting journey into Hawai’i nature this week! Students started by exploring the environment right outside their classroom, learning to identify and understand local plant life. We had an amazing adventure walking over to the insect museum and local Japanese garden. LET’S DANCE: BEGINNING CHOREOGRAPHY
\n<\/span>Students have started to work on their choreography for the showcase. LITTLE JOURNALISTS: MULTIMEDIA STORYTELLING<\/span>
\nWe started off the summer with a photo & video scavenger hunt. Students needed to work as a group to check off different tasks to get their creative juices flowing.
\nThen students learned about journalism, news, and storytelling and the differences between them.
\nWe also did a video challenge where students needed to plan, film, edit and share a 1-minute day in the life. Students showed off their creativity and bright ideas to their classmates.
\nOn Friday, we had out first field trip to I’olani Palace where students learned more about the place they call home.<\/p>\n![\"\"](\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/crdg.hawaii.edu\/summerprograms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/SP-2024_0024_Minecraft-Construct-and-Code.png?resize=64%2C71&ssl=1\")
MINECRAFT: CREATING AND CODING<\/span>
\nStudents started the week by creating name tents so we could all get to know each other. We got into the habit of solving problems by working in groups to practice deconstructing a problem into smaller parts. Students were all able to login to their Minecraft account and began coding with the freedom to work at their own pace.<\/p>\n![\"\"](\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/crdg.hawaii.edu\/summerprograms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/SP-2024_0029_Science-Olympics.png?resize=62%2C68&ssl=1\")
SCIENCE OLYMPICS
\n<\/strong>This week, we learned about different vehicles: Cars, Boats, & Hovercrafts.
\nStudents built a car that rolls down a ramp and then modified it to become a car propelled by a balloon, which turned out to be quite a challenge!
\nNext, they were challenged to build a boat that could hold the most pennies.
\nFrom there, students moved on to building a hovercraft.
\nThrough it all, we learned about the engineering design process, wheel and axels, gravity, push\/pull forces, displacement and buoyancy.<\/p>\n
