CULINARY KIDS: COOKING ADVENTURE
\n<\/span><\/strong>This week in Culinary Kids, we began our trip around the world with dishes inspired by Mexican cuisine and snacks. We learned how to dice fruits and vegetables to use in our savories and sweets like Fresas con Crema and Corn Salsa. Closing out our week in Mexico, we made one of our favorites desserts of the program: Cheesecake Taquitos topped with strawberries and cinnamon sugar!<\/p>\n![\"\"](\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/crdg.hawaii.edu\/summerprograms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/SP-2024-Icons_0008_Full-STEAM-Ahead.png?resize=65%2C71&ssl=1\"){kind=icon}

\n<\/span>We explored natural disasters with laboratory experiments to test how well our buildings held up. On Wednesday, we went on a walking field trip on the UH Manoa campus to study buildings, nature, and birds.<\/p>\n![\"\"](\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/crdg.hawaii.edu\/summerprograms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/SP-2024_0034_HNS-Explorers-272x300.png?resize=63%2C69&ssl=1\")
HNS: EXPLORERS
\n<\/span><\/span>This week, Hawai\u02bbi Nature Study: Explorers explored the importance of plants in Hawai\u02bbi through hands-on investigations and cultural activities. Students conducted a fruit dissection to observe seeds of different shapes and sizes and learned how seeds travel through wind, water, animals, and gravity. They practiced scientific observation skills while exploring plants around campus and used traditional Hawaiian body measurements to estimate and measure plant sizes. Students also learned about the many uses of plants in Hawai\u02bbi through ti leaf lei making and visited Ka Papa Lo\u02bbi O K\u0101newai, where they explored a working kalo lo\u02bbi and how we can m\u0101lama \u02bb\u0101ina. Throughout the week, students strengthened their kilo skills and discovered the important connections between people, plants, and the environment.<\/p>\n![\"\"](\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/crdg.hawaii.edu\/summerprograms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/SP-2024_0035_HNS-Observers.png?resize=63%2C69&ssl=1\")

\n<\/span>This week we learned about plants, including the plant life cycle and what they need to thrive. We also learned about the kalo plant and went on a field trip to the Kanewai Lo’i. \n<\/span>This week the Researchers had amazing adventures. We were able to explore the ecology of Makiki stream, helping to count native species and remove invasive species of fish from the stream. We also got to visit the lo’i on the University of Hawai’i at Manoa campus. Students were able to see the origin of the lo’i water source and work in one of the lo’i patches. In class, the student continue to work on their end of summer research to share with their families. Too excited to wait to see what it is? LITTLE JOURNALISTS: MULTIMEDIA STORYTELLING<\/span>
\nStudents had the opportunity to go on a studio tour of the PBS Hawai’i station. They learned about process it takes to plan, produce, and edit episodes that get shared locally and with the world.
\nSelected students had the opportunity to join the HNS Researchers class to learn about the native fish and animals in our streams. They visited the Makiki Stream to count and record the number of native fish in the stream. They conducted interviews to create a video to show what they learned and to talk about their experience.
\nStudents also started to edit videos of their experiences throughout the summer. MINECRAFT: CREATING AND CODING
\n<\/span>This week, students finished working on their TimeCraft and The Show Must Go On hour of code lessons.
\nStudents also solved the locker brain teaser. \n\u2013 Built a car track and jump launcher.
\n\u2013 Built a simple catapult with popsicle sticks, and a cup popper with cups and balloons.
\n\u2013 Built a more complex catapult with pencils.
\n\u2013 Built two slingshots, one with popsicle sticks and the other with cardboard tubes.
\n\u2013 Built an airplane launcher.
\n\u2013 Learned about Newton’s Third Law, momentum, elastic energy, and torsion.
\nGroups competed to see who’s launcher could launch the farthest!<\/p>\n
