CULINARY KIDS: COOKING ADVENTURE
\n<\/span><\/strong>This week in Culinary Kids, our young chefs prepared a variety of local Japanese dishes such as Somen Salad, Musubi, Yakisoba, and more! In making Yakisoba, we introduced the skill of stir frying and matchstick-cutting vegetables. As we transition into more difficult recipes and cooking at home, students were given more responsibility in cooking and cutting so they can further develop their skills. The heart of making food in Hawai’i is cooking and sharing with love and soul, which is a concept we’ll come back to in Week 5 as we prepare food for our parents!<\/p>\n![\"\"](\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/crdg.hawaii.edu\/summerprograms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/SP-2024-Icons_0008_Full-STEAM-Ahead.png?resize=65%2C71&ssl=1\"){kind=icon}

\n<\/span><\/span>This week, students explored Hawai\u02bbi’s small animals and learned the difference between endemic, native, introduced, and invasive species. We visited the Honolulu Zoo, where students observed animals from Hawai\u02bbi and around the world while learning about habitats, adaptations, and endangered species. We also welcomed guest speaker Mandi Agustin, who shared her background in biology and led engaging activities that demonstrated how different animals behave and work together in groups. Back in the classroom, students created leaf print art, researched a Hawai\u02bbi animal of their choice, and used clay to build detailed animal sculptures that highlighted each species’ unique adaptations.<\/p>\n![\"\"](\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/crdg.hawaii.edu\/summerprograms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/SP-2024_0035_HNS-Observers.png?resize=63%2C69&ssl=1\")

\n<\/span>This week, we learned about different types of Birds, Amphibians, and Mammals, both native and non-native to Hawai’i. We observed these creatures in person at the Honolulu Zoo this past Wednesday. \n<\/span>This week, the Nature Study Researchers have been working hard to finish their end of summer project. We also had an amazing adventure to the Honolulu Zoo. LET’S DANCE: BEGINNING CHOREOGRAPHY
\n<\/span>This week, dancers finished choreographing their pieces and started polishing them for our upcoming showcase. LITTLE JOURNALISTS: MULTIMEDIA STORYTELLING<\/span>
\nStudents have submitted videos which are featured in the newsletter and here on Parent’s Corner! We worked on being able to tell a story with a beginning, middle, and end. We are also learning to edit sound and how to make our videos more interesting with voice overs and music. MINECRAFT: CREATING AND CODING
\n<\/span>We completed Hour of Code Inclusion and Python Island 1 through 3. SCIENCE OLYMPICS
\n<\/strong>Our Week 3 theme was Falling and Flying Objects: Planes, Rockets, & Parachutes. This week’s students:
\n– Built a helicopter that we dropped off the 2nd floor and watched as it twirled to the ground.
\n– Built a hoop glider from straw and paper that glides surprisingly well!
\n– Experimented with four different designs of paper airplanes to see which one flew the farthest, fastest, or had the most airtime.
\n– Built three different rocket designs (straw, balloon, and bottle). The bottle rocket used baking soda and vinegar as propulsion — we had so much fun with this one!
\n– Designed and built a parachute and cushioning device to allow an egg to be dropped from a height and not break.
\n– Learned about propulsion, drag, and Newton\u2019s 3rd law of motion.<\/p>\n
