Geometric-measurement - Session 3: Length Learning Trajectory – Instructional tasks and teaching strategies
Part 6: Wrap up
Overview
Session 1 introduced key concepts of measurement: attribute, conservation, transitivity, equal partitioning, units and unit iteration, accumulation, origin, and the relation between measurement and number. This part includes a review of these key concepts.
Key Points
The eight principles of measurement listed above are key not only for length measurement, but also for area and volume measurement. For example, with each of these types of measurement, it is possible to determine how the measurements of two objects relate to one another without directly comparing them (i.e., the principle of transitivity).
Session Summary
This session focused on learning from practice by engaging in an anecdotal notes workshop, considering the nature of anecdotal notes, and analyzing instructional tasks in terms of the learning trajectory for length.
The next session will launch work on the learning trajectory for area measurement by introducing the key mathematical ideas involved in measuring area.
