Geometric-measurement - Session 4: Area Learning Trajectory – Mathematical goals
Part 1: Overview
Overview
Session 3 concluded the sequence of sessions focused on the Learning Trajectory for length measurement. Session 4 launches work on the Learning Trajectory for area measurement by focusing on the mathematics of area measurement. The work in this session includes
- Measuring the room in a new way
- Comparing and applying measures of area
- Analyzing the ways that area appears in the standards for students’ learning
- Unpacking the mathematics involved in measuring area
Key Points
Sessions 4, 5, and 6 will focus on each of the key components of the learning trajectory for measuring area:
- the goal (i.e., the key concepts involved with measuring area)
- the developmental progression (i.e., levels of thinking through which the typical child passes when learning these ideas), and
- instruction (i.e., the ways teachers can support students’ learning of these ideas).
The scientific approach to Learning Trajectories weaves together ideas and practices drawn from standards, curriculum, teaching, and assessment.
