Geometric-measurement - Session 9: Volume Learning Trajectory – Instructional tasks and teaching strategies
Part 4: Connecting instructional tasks with later learning trajectory levels
Overview
This part introduces instructional tasks that are designed to help students develop knowledge and skill relevant to later levels of the volume Learning Trajectory. This part includes discussion about key measurement concepts that the tasks are designed to teach.
Key Points
In the developmental progression of student thinking about volume, children first identify volume as an attribute, then start seeing individual cubes, then rows/columns, then layers. When presented with the volume formula, students often begin to focus only on numbers. Especially for students who have not yet developed a solid understanding of volume, it is important to continually reinforce thinking about individual units, rows/columns, and layers—and how each of these relates to the dimensions.
