HNS: EXPLORERS
This week, the Hawai’i Nature Study: Explorers, explored what makes an insect, participated in a Safari Activity, researched about their favorite insect, and explored the Insect Museum! On Monday, we started off with introductions, making classroom rules, and the parts of an insect. The students showed great curiosity, kindness, and eagerness to get outside and explore the world of insects. On Tuesday, we had an Insect Safari where students explored the types of insects in our school community. They did really well at following directions while outside, handling insects with care, and respecting the ‘aina. On Thursday, they researched their favorite insect and drew scientific sketches, learned about their life cycle, and understood if they were endemic, native, or invasive to Hawai’i and their purpose. On Friday, we explored the Insect Museum which closed out our week full of Insects.

HNS: RESEARCHERS
This week the HNS researchers began their journey through our land. We learned about the water cycle through our journey as a water drop. As a class we identified our contribution to our growing trash problem and created posters to create awareness. Finally we took an adventure to the Insect Museum and Japanese Garden on the UH Manoa campus. This week was a great introduction to our research, but we still have a busy adventure ahead. Ask your child to teach you about something new they learned this week!

LITTLE JOURNALISTS
This week was a very full week for the Little Journalists! We took a field trip to Ka Leo O Hawaii, University of Hawaii’s newspaper. There, students were able to see the newsroom and talk with the faculty advisor about deadlines, journalism and working with a team. They also wrote their first stories that are featured in our weekly newsletter. Students practiced interviewing one another to write short biographies about each other. For their second story they needed to research, plan and write about a class offered during the summer. Some students got the opportunity to interview and see another class that is offered in the morning.
