NOTE: It was a short (and busy) week, so we are still processing the photos from our classes. We will update this post with photo galleries for each class. Please check back.
ANIMALS IN ART
This week students created a portfolio, with drawing drafts of cats and dogs. They invented their own cat character, and today sculpted various items to warm up our sculpting routines. We used air dry clay, and will paint them Monday. Some early finishers colored in a pictorial vocabulary worksheet of forest animals that I brought over from the Italian 101 class I am teaching in the mornings at UHM. Tomorrow we will be working with watercolor on a few more sketches of cats and dogs. We have some Art vocab coming tomorrow in Italian with our painting lesson.
CREATIVE PROGRAMMING WITH SCRATCH
This week, students were introduced to Scratch from a realistic, coding-applied lens. Students were randomly placed into five different groups, introduced each other and their teams, and jumped right into Scratch. Next week, the teams will start collaborating on their first programming project!
CREATOR SPACE ADVANCED
This week we set up our sketchbooks, learned how to create a basic friendship bracelet using tying and the candy-striped technique, and began planning our 6×6 mixed media canvas pieces.
DRAMA: JUST ACT—ACTING GYM
We started out this week getting comfortable with being on stage. Using assigned scenes from movies, students learned how to hold a script and do a cold read. We also introduced the three forms of acting: words; expressions; body. The students also collaborated on our ideas for the final performance. We hope you all will join us!
DUNGEONS, DRAGONS, AND TABLE TOP RPGS
This week we did character creation. The kids picked out what kind of character they will play during their adventures. Then they built their backstories, gathered their starting equipment, and figured out what spells and special abilities they have.
JOURNEY TO THE STARS
In Journey to the Stars, students will embark on a journey through the cosmos! Students will explore the wonders of space, from the stars that light up our night sky to the planets that make up our solar system. This week, we learned about our own solar system and the things found there: planets, moons, asteroids and comets. To demonstrate what we learned we created a model of the solar system. Then we went beyond our solar system to begin to explore stars, galaxies, and the concept of the universe.
MINECRAFT: A VIRTUAL LEARNING ADVENTURE
This week, we covered some introductory topics such as going over rules and expectations as well as establishing our daily routine. Then the students began learning how to log in to essential resources like Google classroom, class dojo, and Minecraft education. Finally, we dove into Minecraft. Since this class is open to students of all experience levels, we are getting starting by learning how to play Minecraft on a computer through tutorials.
ROBOTICS WITH LEGO WEDO
This class is very cooperative, well behaved and respectful, but their skill levels are quite varied so I make plenty of space for them to explore and learn using their acquired skills as a starting place. Gaining familiarity with myself, Ms. Kalia, our wonderful Teaching Assistant, and the LEGO sets has been the focus this week. Next week, we will delve into building things that directly translate to real-world applications.
ROBOTICS WITH VEX
Aloha Parents! This week in Robotics with VEX we had technical issues so we switched over to Lego EV3. Don’t worry, the kids are still having lots of fun! They’re in groups of 3-4 and are using the time to build their own designs. All have come up with unique drive train designs and are programming their robots to move through a maze.
SCIENCE OLYMPICS
This week the students learned about the wheel and axle and got to work in teams to build their very own car with the given materials. The teams tested out their cars, and were able to make modifications to try and make them work better. They also got to test their car with a balloon to see how the balloon would give it an extra boost. Students next experimented with building tin foil boats. As a team they had to figure out the best way to make a boat that would not only float, but could also hold the most pennies. Each team tested with just their tin foil boat, and then were given additional supplies to make modifications. The last day of the week the students worked on designing and building. They designed and built hovercrafts from Lego, and also were able to use K’nex to make different kinds of vehicles.
