HNS: EXPLORERS
This week was all about plants! On Monday, the students explored Kā Anakahi (measuring with our bodies). We did an observatory study of tree trunks in our school community where students measured the circumference using Kā Anakahi. We also did a seed lab where we explored different types of seeds in fruit! On Tuesday, we explored endemic, native, non-native, and invasive species. We identified and sketched different species around our school community! We ended the day learning, reciting, and acting out mo’olelo on Kahalopuna, ‘Ōhi’a Lehua, and Naupaka. On Wednesday, we learned about different plants we use in Hawai’i. We explored canoe plants and how a lot of the plants we use today are non-native, such as kalo, ‘ulu, ‘uala, niu, and ipu! We continued to work on building our kalo, exploring and reflecting on what makes us uniquely beautiful. On Thursday, we went to Ka Papa Lo’i o Kānewai and the students had fun connecting everything we learned in class in the field! On Friday, we appreciated each other’s kalo and finalized our class lo’i kalo! The students explored the art of lei making, using different plants around our school. This was a great week about plants and I had so much fun learning with the kids!
