HIGHLIGHTS

student growth

Student Growth

Progress monitoring data indicate that students using the M^Power curriculum showed higher levels of growth than a comparative national sample (p = 0.0001).

Student Engagement

Students engage in the algebraic tasks, share their ideas in multiple discussion opportunities, and work in different group structures.

Accessible Tasks

Tasks have multiple entry points and the capability to be extended to challenge thinking, making them accessible for a broad range of diverse learners.

MPower A Path to Understanding Algebra is a student-centered, year-long curriculum designed to build and strengthen algebraic concepts and skills. It addresses the challenge of supporting middle and high school students who struggle in algebra and lessening the achievement gap.

Student Book

The MPower Student Book uses instructional strategies that support students who struggle to develop concepts and skills that help them build confidence and competence in mathematics. It takes learners through six captivating units, providing them with a solid foundation in algebraic concepts and problem-solving skills. Each unit is expertly crafted to build upon the previous one, ensuring a seamless and immersive learning experience.

Student Workbook

The MPower Student Workbook is a carefully designed resource tailored to support students who may find algebra challenging. It is dedicated to fostering a deep understanding of mathematical concepts, building confidence, and nurturing competence in algebra. Going beyond the traditional methods of rote memorization and simplistic problem-solving, the Student Workbook employs innovative instructional strategies and thoughtfully curated practice exercises to reinforce understanding. With clear explanations and step-by-step examples, students can engage with complex concepts and develop the necessary skills to excel in algebra.

Teacher Notes

The MPower Teacher Notes include step-by-step guidelines for teachers on how to lead the activities in each unit, along with suggested questions that can be used to enhance and extend students’ understanding of the material. The curriculum comprises four main components for each lesson. The “Get Started” section includes a task that serves as a review of previously learned material, a problem-solving task, or an advance organizer for introducing new content. In the “Share” section, there is a recommended instructional strategy for discussing homework, with detailed explanations provided in the appendix. The “Explore” section is the heart of the lesson, providing students with an opportunity to engage with a mathematical topic. The aim of these tasks is to foster high levels of engagement, promote the development of conceptual understanding, and offer various points of entry so that the tasks are accessible to all students. Finally, in the “Reflect” section, the big ideas and new concepts from the lesson are summarized.
