This guide was developed in 1989, following the Hōkūleʻaʻs famous Voyage of Rediscovery (1985–1987), to provide teachers with set of activities to accompany an excursion to see the Hōkūleʻaat the Maritime Center in Honolulu. Sadly, the Maritime Center closed in 2009, but many of the activities in this guide are still useful.
The Field Trip guide gives a brief history of the Hokule‘a and includes 5 days of activities that allow students to learn about the Polynesian island groups, study the parts of a voyaging canoe, and imagine life at sea.
