ANIMALS IN ART
This week, our artists learned about animal patterns and camouflage— diving into depth on why animals have patterns and why they camouflage.
We translated this new knowledge into our art projects by creating a camouflaged animal in a forest or ocean habitat. We also practiced new art techniques like salt painting and crayon resist. At the end of the week, our artists combined everything they learned to make an animal out of mixed media.
CREATIVE PROGRAMMING WITH SCRATCH
This week, our class went on field trips to the UH Mānoa Japanese Gardens and the Honolulu Museum of Art to take pictures of and with art pieces and statues for future projects and backgrounds. Getting a good look at different environments gave us great inspiration for video games such as koi fish simulations and more. Still in the beginning of our journey through coding, we covered and reviewed ways to move and animate our characters.
CREATOR SPACE ADVANCED
This week we completed our second shrinky dink project, continued working on our mixed media canvases, and began planning our airdry clay sculptures.

MINECRAFT: A VIRTUAL LEARNING ADVENTURE
PASSPORT TO ART
This week, students explored artistic traditions from Oceania and Hawaiʻi through hands-on projects and a field trip. Students began creating Australian Aboriginal dot art inspired by themes of storytelling, symbols, and connection to place, discussing how artists can communicate ideas and experiences through patterns and imagery. Students also learned about the cultural significance of lei and created their own lei using ti leaf, plumeria, and puakenikeni while discussing how lei symbolize connection and appreciation. The class also visited the Jean Charlot Collection at the University of Hawaiʻi, where students viewed artwork and murals around campus and learned about how artists tell stories through public art.
ROBOTICS WITH VEX
This week, VEX students developed their bots to play freeze tag by adding a second button to trigger a “freeze.” Next, groups had to create their own instructions for robot freeze tag, including rules to help prevent damage to the bots. During playtesting, students realized that their rules were too vague and additional rules were needed to address the holes other groups discovered. Students continued to develop their bots to become better freeze tag competitors.
SLEUTH ACADEMY FOR JR. DETECTIVES
This week’s theme is “Fingerprinting Evidence.”
Our detectives learned to classify the three main types of fingerprint patterns, along with distinguishing characteristics that can appear. They collected and lifted their own fingerprints and analyzed them by type. They then compared our class distribution of prints to the general population. They also learned about toe and lip prints. A mock crime scene has been investigated, evidence collected, and lab reports analyzed. They will continue to investigate this crime in the coming weeks. We also investigated a real case with emphasis on evidence collected and how the case was solved.
STEAM WITH LEGO SPIKE
This week, we created and programmed different amusement park rides. Students completed multiple challenges and learned to use their creativity and brainstorming skills to fix a problem.
STORYBOOK TO STAGE
This week, students were introduced to the story, “Room on the Broom”
Our performers tried out different character roles from the readers Theater script, then they made headbands for their selected roles. We practiced 8 character script read throughs. To develop our performance skills, we played “Emotion Uno” as well as various improv type games, like Bus Stop and One Word Story, to get us thinking on our feet.
UNDERSEA ECOLOGY
This week our ecologists focused on herbivores, building off of our seaweed unit last week. On Tuesday, we welcomed Ms. Gracie who taught our ecologists about octopuses and turtles. On Friday, we welcomed Mr. Alejandro who spoke with us over Zoom about animal consciousness. Throughout the week we completed several crafts to learn about jellyfish, corals, ‘opihi, snails, crabs, and more.
