We started this week in Columbo, Sri Lanka! We learned how to make Rotti Pratha, a simple bread that people in Sri Lanka enjoy as a snack or a side dish to curry, and drank some Falooda, a sweet and refreshing drink. While we waited for our bread to rise, we did the boat challenge! For this challenge we worked together in groups to create boats that could carry the most weight. With our boats ready to sail, we voyaged to our next country, Jamaica! We learned how to properly greet people by saying “Wah gwan,” which is Jamaican Patois for “what’s going on”. While in Jamaica, we tried Toto, a traditional coconut cake, it was very sweet, and they loved it! We also got to try beef patties, which are Jamaican style hot pockets. They had a little kick to them, but that didn’t stop our brave apple pie students from devouring them! We also did an activity where we mapped Stan Sheriff Center as a class! We read a book called How To Be a Viking written by Cressida Cowell with Hiccup, a character from the movie “How to Train Your Dragon.” We used what we learned from the story to create our own unique story maps. We ended the week with a special guest, Aunty Chanel! She taught us more about Jamaica, and we got to try banana fritters.
