Screencast 1: Preparing to facilitate Session 1 and Session 2

The facilitator overview video (below) will support you in learning about the overall design of the module and more specifically about the first two sessions in this module. These ideas include:

  • Learning about the purposes and content of the facilitator support series
  • Exploring the mathematics, and mathematical practices that could be focal in the first problem used with participants – The Pool Border problem
  • Connecting mathematical practices with work on a specific mathematics problem
Preparing for engagement Before you engage in this overview, please do the following:
  1. Read the math notes (found in the “Supplements” section of Session 2 Part 2). Choose a solution to Pool Border problem that you found interesting and come prepared to share this with your colleagues
  2. Watch the video about our work with videos (Video A in Session 2 Part 4)
How this overview supports the facilitator of the module This facilitator overview is designed to provide opportunities for you to:
  1. Pool Border problem
    1. Making and analyzing conjectures.
    2. Considering facilitation challenges, such as helping adults persevere in making sense of the problem and analyzing its conjectures.
    3. Creating environments to support students’ learning of the mathematics practices.
  2. Developing ways of analyzing and learning from practice (how to leverage the “mock video workshop” in session 2).
  3. Supporting participants’ work on CCAs.

PLEASE NOTE: THESE OVERVIEW VIDEOS WERE DEVELOPED FROM INTERACTIONS AMONG MODULE DESIGNERS. THE PARTICIPANTS ARE PROJECT TEAM MEMBERS, DRAWING ON INSIGHTS AND IDEAS EXPRESSED BY FACILITATORS IN PREVIOUS SESSIONS.

THE OVERVIEWS SOMETIMES FEATURE A LEARNING MANAGEMENT SYSTEM, CTOOLS, THAT IS NO LONGER USED. WHILE CTOOLS OR RELATED TOOLS LIKE MEDIA GALLERY OR FORUMS ARE NO LONGER USED, WE BELIEVE THAT THE TYPES OF WORK DONE IN THOSE CTOOLS MAY BE RELEVANT FOR FACILITATORS TO CONSIDER AND, IF DESIRED, REPLICATE USING OTHER AVAILABLE TOOLS.
