Screencast 2: Preparing to facilitate Session 3 and Session 4

The facilitator overview video (below) will support you in learning about sessions 3 and 4 of this module. These ideas include:

  • Exploring the mathematics, and mathematical practices, that could be focal in the second problem used with participants – The Three-Coin problem.
  • Connecting mathematical practices with work on a specific mathematics problem.
  • Video workshop as a method for learning from teaching through engagement with colleagues.
Preparing for engagement Before you engage in this overview, please do the following:
  1. Solve the Three Coin Problem or bring an interesting solution of the problem from their session
  2. Watch the video about our work with videos
How this overview supports the facilitator of the module This facilitator overview is designed to provide opportunities for you to:
  1. 3-Coin problem-
    1. Noticing and begin defining the features of a good mathematical explanation.
    2. Making sense of different representations that could be used as part of an explanation.
    3. Modifying tasks to nurture mathematical reasoning
  2. Prepare for video workshops that will happen for the first time in session 4, by
    1. Unpacking the process that will be used by participants.
    2. Learning how to facilitate participants’ use of focus questions to guide their conversations.
    3. Understanding the need for debriefing video workshop discussions so that productive norms can be developed over time.

PLEASE NOTE: THESE OVERVIEW VIDEOS WERE DEVELOPED FROM INTERACTIONS AMONG MODULE DESIGNERS. THE PARTICIPANTS ARE PROJECT TEAM MEMBERS, DRAWING ON INSIGHTS AND IDEAS EXPRESSED BY FACILITATORS IN PREVIOUS SESSIONS.

THE OVERVIEWS SOMETIMES FEATURE A LEARNING MANAGEMENT SYSTEM, CTOOLS, THAT IS NO LONGER USED. WHILE CTOOLS OR RELATED TOOLS LIKE MEDIA GALLERY OR FORUMS ARE NO LONGER USED, WE BELIEVE THAT THE TYPES OF WORK DONE IN THOSE CTOOLS MAY BE RELEVANT FOR FACILITATORS TO CONSIDER AND, IF DESIRED, REPLICATE USING OTHER AVAILABLE TOOLS.
