Screencast 4: Preparing to facilitate Session 7 and Session 8

The facilitator overview video (below) will support you in learning about sessions 3 and 4 of this module. These ideas include:

  • Exploring the mathematics, and mathematical practices, that could be focal in the fourth problem used with participants – Geometry Statements
  • Connecting mathematical practices with work on a specific mathematics problem
Preparing for engagement Before you engage in this overview, please do the following:
  1. Watch the following videos:
    1. Video A in Session 7 Part 2
    2. Video B in Session 8 Part 4
  2. Read the Scaffolding Explanations document in Session 8 part 4. Consider the first explanation and identify which of the features of a good explanation are present. Then think about instructional moves that a teacher could use to support/advance student learning.
  3. Read the math notes on Geometry Statements.
How this overview supports the facilitator of the module This facilitator overview is designed to provide opportunities for you to:
  1. Consider ways that teachers work to support students’ explanations.
  2. Practice analyzing students’ explanations and ways of making reasoning explicit for a whole class.
  3. Consider ideas and practices needed by facilitators as they work with participants in these module sessions.
  4. Discuss the use of the “math notes” resource.
  5. Consider the status of your use of video workshops

PLEASE NOTE: THESE OVERVIEW VIDEOS WERE DEVELOPED FROM INTERACTIONS AMONG MODULE DESIGNERS. THE PARTICIPANTS ARE PROJECT TEAM MEMBERS, DRAWING ON INSIGHTS AND IDEAS EXPRESSED BY FACILITATORS IN PREVIOUS SESSIONS.

THE OVERVIEWS SOMETIMES FEATURE A LEARNING MANAGEMENT SYSTEM, CTOOLS, THAT IS NO LONGER USED. WHILE CTOOLS OR RELATED TOOLS LIKE MEDIA GALLERY OR FORUMS ARE NO LONGER USED, WE BELIEVE THAT THE TYPES OF WORK DONE IN THOSE CTOOLS MAY BE RELEVANT FOR FACILITATORS TO CONSIDER AND, IF DESIRED, REPLICATE USING OTHER AVAILABLE TOOLS.
