Screencast 3: Preparing to facilitate Session 5 and Session 6

The facilitator overview video (below) will support you in learning about sessions 3 and 4 of this module. These ideas include:

  • Exploring the mathematics, and mathematical practices, that could be focal in the third problem used with participants – the Sum of Consecutive Odd Numbers problem
  • Connecting mathematical practices with work on a specific mathematics problem
  • Enhancing video workshop as a method for learning from teaching through engagement with colleagues
Preparing for engagement Before you engage in this overview, please do the following:
  1. Solve the Sum of Consecutive Odd Numbers problem or bring an interesting solution of the problem from their session
  2. Read the following and come prepared with any questions:
    1. Conversation starters
    2. Math practices (with bullets)
How this overview supports the facilitator of the module This facilitator overview is designed to provide opportunities for you to:
  1. Learn about the role that conversation starters could have in enhancing the Video Workshop process
  2. Practice-
    1. Making the mathematical practices explicit.
    2. Making sense of different representations that could be used as part of an explanation.
    3. Using tasks to create opportunities to work on mathematical practices.

PLEASE NOTE: THESE OVERVIEW VIDEOS WERE DEVELOPED FROM INTERACTIONS AMONG MODULE DESIGNERS. THE PARTICIPANTS ARE PROJECT TEAM MEMBERS, DRAWING ON INSIGHTS AND IDEAS EXPRESSED BY FACILITATORS IN PREVIOUS SESSIONS.

THE OVERVIEWS SOMETIMES FEATURE A LEARNING MANAGEMENT SYSTEM, CTOOLS, THAT IS NO LONGER USED. WHILE CTOOLS OR RELATED TOOLS LIKE MEDIA GALLERY OR FORUMS ARE NO LONGER USED, WE BELIEVE THAT THE TYPES OF WORK DONE IN THOSE CTOOLS MAY BE RELEVANT FOR FACILITATORS TO CONSIDER AND, IF DESIRED, REPLICATE USING OTHER AVAILABLE TOOLS.
