As design, manufacturing, and fabrication careers increase in the United States, computer-aided design (CAD), computer assisted manufacturing (CAM), and computer numerically controlled (CNC) technologies are becoming more critical. In this three-week workshop, participants will learn basic skills in CAD and CAM design as well as CNC fabrication. The workshops will provide hands-on experience using these technologies. They will focus primarily on using two types of CAD software: Vectric Aspire, which is used for artistic products and Autodesk Inventor, which is used for engineering products. Vectric Aspire has tools for transforming 2D sketches, photos, drawings, and digital artwork into detailed 3D relief models and for calculating toolpaths to accurately cut these shapes on a CNC router or print them on a 3D printer. Autodesk Inventor has tools for designing, documenting, modeling, and simulating 3D mechanical parts and assemblies. Participants will also learn to use FeatureCAM, a computer-assisted manufacturing (CAM) program that uses CAD drawings to generate toolpaths that can be cut on a CNC Mill. The workshop is aligned to NGSS and CTE standards.
